The two riders are positioned on the bicycle back to back. A differential unit is mounted on a recumbent tandem bicycle in order to allow 2 different inexperienced riders to enjoy and even race together...the whole unit was designed by students for their capstone project. There were two teams for this project where one team was in charge of structural frame design while another team was in charge of designing the drive-train system. The current prototype uses the differential unit as a power combining mechanism to transmit two inputs to one output and is mounted on pillow-box bearings and has two input sprockets that are fixed to the input shafts, as a result for this current configuration in order to apply the force the riders must keep their feet on the pedals at all times.. to alleviate this problem a possible solution is to use a backstopping freewheel instead of the pillow-box bearings while the two input sprockets are also changed to freewheels that only apply the force in one direction...also the current setup requires the rear driver to pedal backwards unless a reversing mechanism such as two gears are implemented as well for one possible solution. thank you for checking out the project........ :-)
